What are mechanical royalties, and what's the MLC?

Every time a song is streamed or sold, it earns royalties for the people who wrote and own the composition. In the US, the MLC collects and pays the mechanical share — but only when the recording is correctly matched to the composition. When it isn't, the money sits unclaimed.
